Try a road test pulling a hill, the longer the better. If you hear the noise select 4x4 high right away. If noise stops it "may be" the splines on the hubs slightly touching. Ford uses Vacuum to hold the locking hubs off, If vacuum is lost, like when pulling a hill, they try to slightly engage, thus the noise. Good luck.
