Since FFXIV is so fragile about audio changes, I started using Voicemeeter Banana (it's free). It creates a virtual output device, and you can send the output to multiple devices. I set Voicemeeter as the default device, and you can make whatever audio output changes in the Voicemeeter software without crashing FFXIV.Windows handling of audio output is rubbish, but FFXIV actually found a way to make it worse.
